#1 – Acura as an ‘Everyday Supercar’
The Acura NSX or the ‘New Sports eXperimental’ was the world’s first car that was produced completely with aluminum and was billed as the ‘Everyday Supercar’.
#2 – First Japanese Luxury Car
Created in 1986, Acura was the first Japanese luxury car brand to hit the market.
#3 – Latin Origins
The origin of the Acura name is derived from Latin — acu — defined as “done with precision” or “mechanically precise.” Originally, Honda pronounced the marque as “a-coor-uh,” but customers preferred “Ah-cure-uh” so the new name stuck.
#4 – Honda Taps Into Foreign Luxury Market
With the Acura brand, Honda is credited with being the first Japanese company to tap into the foreign luxury market.
Before Acura, automobiles exported mainly Japanese had a reputation to be economical in design and market value rather than luxury.
#5 – Acura in the Entertainment Industry
Acura and Marvel Entertainment have had a professional partnership since 2010.
#6 – The Original Acura Wasn’t Approved
The Acura logo, introduced in 1990 for the 1991 model year, is a stylized “A” (for Acura) that can also be interpreted as a skewed “H” (for Honda). The logo that was originally authorized without approval by Soichiro Honda did not contain the small horizontal bar joining the two vertical pillars—thus, it did not form the letter “H”.
Soichiro Honda ordered the 5,000 badges already produced to be destroyed, including prying off the emblems applied to 309 cars already (US-spec Integra, Legend, and NSX models).
#7 – First Vehicle Produced with All-Aluminum Body
The Acura NSX, not the 2015 Ford F-150, was the 1st vehicle produced with an all-aluminum body.
#8 – Acura was immediately successful.
Though essentially a marketing creation for the North American market, the Acura car brand was immediately successful, thanks to its attractive features, performance and Honda’s reputation for reliability.
